Christine Council and Timia Grant both said going to the same college to play basketball was a coincidence, but it was a twist of fate the Northside seniors have embraced.

Both Grant and Council will play at Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh next season after both helped lead Northside to the NCHSAA 2-A East Regional semifinals this past year.

“I’m really excited and I think having a friend there with me will be better,” the 17-year-old Grant said. “It will give us a chance to get to know each other a little more and really build on the chemistry that we have.”

The 19-year-old Council agreed.

“It’s going to be fun,” she said. “We have a lot of chemistry. Since we had so much chemistry at Northside, we might as well play together in college.”

Council said she had “other choices,” but picked Wake Tech because she enjoyed a visit to the campus. Grant said she considered Johnson & Wales and Cape Fear among others, but that she chose Wake Tech after meeting with the coaching staff. The Eagles went 18-12 overall and 9-9 in Region 10 conference play this past season.

Both Grant and Council were valuable forwards in helping Northside go 24-6 overall and winning the East Central Conference tournament title for the eighth consecutive season.

The 5-foot-10 Grant averaged 11.7 points, 11.9 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 2.1 assists per game to earn a spot on the first team of The Daily News all-area team.

“I think something I can bring to the basketball team would be my energy and my aggressiveness,” Grant said. “The coaches said if I work hard and stay focused, they can build me into a top player.”

Meanwhile, the 5-7 Council only averaged 3.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.6 steals and 1.3 assists, but was the Monarchs’ best half-court defender. Often times she guarded the other team’s best scorer.

“Defense. Most definitely my defense is what I’m going to bring to the team,” Council said. “I’m a defensive player and I think I’ll be a good key defender for the team.”

Both players want to improve their games before they join the Eagles.

“I’m working on my dribble drive and on my shot,” Council said. “Hopefully when I start playing with the team they will get better.”

And as for Grant?

“I need to work on my post moves and work on finishing layups and on my ball handling,” she said. “I need to stay focused and stay in the gym to get better.”
